i was copying a file to my 8gb usb drive and it stopped half way: "input/output error"
then when i tried to copy anything it would say it is a read-only file system.
i was using ubuntu 10.10 for most of it, and tried windows xp, too.
so after some time, i tried reformatting it, with a few programs, but they would all have errors (gparted [normal and from a parted magic live disc], "disk utility", the windows xp right-click format tool [normal and with quick format checked off], some hp format tool...) now in ubuntu it doesn't even show up, except under "computer" in nautilus and in the "disk utility" as a generic usb flash drive. in windows it shows up but when you try to open it it says to insert a drive into drive e, or whatever it's mounted as.
do you know if there's any way to fix it?
it's like it reads that there should be a usb drive there, but doesn't find any storage, like the memory is dead now :(

hey,
some USB-drives have this little thing where you can switch between "read-only" and read+write. Have you checked this (if your drive has this "thing")?

Flash drives have a rather limited number of read-write cycles, especially cheaper ones. It's quite likely that your thumb drive is simply dead hardware-wise. That's the best moment to buy a new one ;)

yes, i've checked, there is none. another clue to it not being that problem is how when you first plug it in, it's normal, but after you start copying things it goes read only.

really? that sucks. mine was an 8gb drive that i got for ~$20, kinda cheap, but idk. it's a pqi U273, if that makes any difference.
i was thinking it might just be my messing around with formatting that it doesn't come up anymore, i wrecked it. i had have another one that did that occasionally, too, but a format worked then. i think i might have to get another, or, well, i don't really have to (i have a 4gb one in my watch, and another 4gb one), but yeah, it's probably dead. :(
